1960년대는 예술과 기술, 전시 실천이 전례 없이 교차하며 미술의 역사에 중대한 변화가 발생한 시기였습니다. 마치 오늘날의 AI처럼, 프로그램, 정보, 시스템 같은 용어들이 예술 실천에 영향을 주고, 새로운 미학적·사회적 실험을 이끌었습니다. 이미지문화 연구소는 향후 2년 동안 미술사에서 잊힌 1960년대 알고리즘 기반 전시를 발굴하고, 이를 통해 미술의 역사를 재구성하고자 합니다.

올해 행사는 밀라노에서 개최된 《아르테 프로그라마타(Arte Programmata 1962)》, 런던 ICA의 《사이버네틱 세렌디피티(Cybernetic Serendipity 1968)》, 뉴욕 유대인박물관의 《소프트웨어(Software 1970)》 전을 중심으로 진행됩니다. 특히 기술 용어가 전시장에서 창조적으로 해석되고, ‘열린 예술 작품’, '개념 미술’ 같은 새로운 예술 담론을 이끄는 과정을 집중적으로 고찰함으로써, 미술의 역사를 기술의 관점에서 재구성하게 될 것입니다.

올해 콜로키움은 연구소 내부 행사로 진행되며, 향후 유튜브 채널을 통해 녹화 영상이 제공될 예정입니다.

The 1960s was a period in which art, technology, and exhibition practices intersected in unprecedented ways, bringing about significant transformations in artistic movement. Much like the role of AI today, terms such as program, information, and system influenced artistic practice and led to new aesthetic and social experiments. The Institute for Image Studies seek to rediscover a number of algorithmic exhibitions from the 1960s that have been largely forgotten in art history, and to reexamine the history of art through this technological lens.

This year’s event focuses on three key exhibitions—Arte Programmata (Milan, 1962), Cybernetic Serendipity (London, 1968), and Software (New York, 1970). By examining how technical terminology was creatively interpreted within the exhibition space and how it gave rise to new artistic discourses such as the “open work” and “conceptual art,” the colloquium seeks to reconsider the history of modern art from the perspective of technology.

This first session will be held as an internal event of the Institute, with recorded lectures made available later through the Institute’s official YouTube channel.
